Dermaplaning 101: Everything you need to know

If you're looking for a facial treatment that leaves your skin glowing, smooth, and free of dead skin cells, dermaplaning may be exactly what you need. At Schulz Beauty our Dermaplaning Facial promotes physical exfoliation to improve the texture of the skin while also brightening the skin and promoting balance in the skin with nourishing products. Below we dive into everything you need to know about dermaplaning!

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplanning is a safe and non-invasive, popular treatment that promotes physical exfoliation by manually exfoliating the epidermis using a sterilized surgical scalpel. The dead skin cells along with vellus hair (aka. peach fuzz) are removed from the face; this process reveals a brighter, smoother complexion and allows for better absorption of skincare products.

What are the benefits of Dermaplaning?

  • improves the texture of the skin due to the physical exfoliation of the stratum cornea

  • brightens the skin tone - especially when paired with products used to brighten the skin

  • provides a physical exfoliation allowing skin care products to penetrate more effectively

  • the removal of vellus hair - which creates a smoother skin appearance and application of makeup - hello glowy skin!

  • reduces the appearance of acne scars, including acne pitted scars

  • unlike harsher exfoliation methods like chemical peels or microdermabrasion, dermaplaning is gentle enough for most skin types, including sensitive skin

Does Dermaplaning increase hair growth on the face?

A common misconception of dermaplaning is that because it removes the vellus hair/peach fuzz it may increase the thickness of hair when it grows back. This is a myth as the dermaplanning doesn’t affect the hair follicle nor will it change the hair growth pattern; thus, it won’t cause the vellus hair to grow in thicker or darker.

Who is Dermaplanning recommended for?

For those wanting healthy skin maintenance, to reduce fine lines & wrinkles, eliminate dull skin, those with dry skin, helps with uneven skin texture and acne scarring. Dermaplaning is a safe form of deeper exfoliation for pregnant or breastfeeding mothers when some treatments and products need to be avoided.

Who should avoid dermaplanning?

Those with inflammed/active acne to prevent spreading breakouts, areas with eczema or psoriasis, cold sores, sunburn, those on accutane.

As dermaplaning incorporates the use of a surgical grade scalpel blade, if a client presents with a metal allergy including nickel, the procedure needs to be avoided.

How often can Dermaplaning be performed?

Every 4-6 weeks or as needed; dermaplaning can be performed as a part of a healthy skin maintenance routine since there is no downtime or to maintain results of other clinical treatments. Dermaplanning works well with other modalities (light chemical peels, LED lights, etc.).

What are the steps of a Dermaplanning Facial?

The first cleanse will focus on removing oil, makeup dirt and debris while the second cleanses focuses on thoroughly cleansing the skin and preparing the skin for the treatment. After the second cleanse we will proceed with the dermaplanning; using either a hylauronic acid or beauty oil depending on the skin type being oily or dry. This process is painless and often described as feeling like a light brushing against the skin.

The Hydrating Masque with Enzymes is one of our favourite masque to use post-dermaplaning as it removes any remaining dead skin cells with the use of papain and bromelain enzymes while drenching the skin in moisture. The CBD Hydratherapy Masque with Micro Silver is another favourite masque for post-dermaplaning, which focuses on nourishing the skin.

After our customized mask we will add LED light therapy to address any specific skin concerns (i.e. anti-aging, hyperpigmentation) and accelerate cell renewal. We finish by cocktailing different serums & moisturizers depending on each individual client and to increase the efficacy of the treatment.

Since dermaplaning removes the top layer of dead skin cells, your skin will be more sensitive to the sun, so sunscreen is a must to finish.

What are the aftercare instructions for Dermaplanning?

Post-dermaplaning, your skin may feel slightly sensitive, so it’s important to follow these aftercare steps:

  • stay hydrated

  • stick to a gentle, hydrating cleanser in the days following your treatment to avoid irritation

  • since your skin is more sensitive after dermaplaning, make sure to wear sunscreen daily to protect against UV rays

  • for at least 48 hours post-treatment, avoid using retinol, glycolic acids, or any other exfoliating products that could irritate your skin.
